Rally at Michigan Capitol to Protect Liberty and Stop Persecution of Religious People
State lawmakers, clergy members, and concerned citizens gathered December 2, 2015 at the Michigan Capitol to safeguard liberty and demand an end to the persecution of religious people.
Rally participants are seeking support for a legislative resolution that calls on the governor, attorney general, and other government officials to uphold and protect fundamental rights of religious individuals. Rep. Thomas Hooker, R-Byron Center, is sponsoring the resolution in the Michigan House of Representatives.
“The religious freedoms that Americans have cherished for more than two centuries are eroding,” said Hooker. “It’s important to raise awareness about this disturbing trend. God-given liberty is precious and must be protected.”
Hooker and other lawmakers believe the U.S. Supreme Court unconstitutionally operated outside the rule of law by unilaterally creating a new purported constitutional right. They say the Obergefell v. Hodges decision on same-sex marriage usurps state sovereignty and ominously threatens the freedoms of speech and religious conscience.
“At the same time the persecution of religious people continues to escalate,” said Senator Patrick Colbeck, R-Canton. “College students have been disciplined and expelled for exercising conscience. Small businesses are excessively fined by government for doing the same. These warning signs cannot be ignored.”
There is growing concern that courts are issuing rulings on major policies that should instead by decided by state legislatures.
“The important difference is that elected officials are accountable to the public,” said Rep. Lee Chatfield, R-Levering. “Courts should not substitute their social and economic beliefs for the judgment of legislative bodies, who are entrusted by the people to pass laws.”
Salt & Light Global helped organize the rally. It is a non-profit educational organizations that works with communities to promote good governance and preserve the blessings of liberty.
